How the Artist Split Actually Works

In short: On every tee sold, HollaJack keeps a flat $18.00 and splits everything above $18 evenly with the artist. So the artist earns the tee price minus $18, divided by 2. A default Unisex tee starts at $23.00, which pays the artist $2.50 on N° 001; that is arithmetic from the defaults, not a prediction of sales.
Independent artists are right to be wary of platforms that promise to “handle the business side.” Too often that phrase has meant unclear cuts and payouts nobody could fully account for. Plenty of artists have been handed a number they couldn’t trace back to anything. So here is how the money works on HollaJack, stated plainly and with the arithmetic shown. You should not have to take any of it on trust.
How is the price of a HollaJack tee built?
Every tee price has two parts. The first is the garment price. Today that is $21.00 for a Men’s or Unisex tee and $25.25 for a Women’s tee. The second is your art price. You set where it starts, and if you leave it alone it starts at $2.00.
The art price does not sit still. Every edition sold steps it up by a set amount, $0.10 per edition by default, set per design. So a default Unisex tee starts at $23.00 for N° 001. N° 002 is $23.10, and N° 101 is $33.00. The product page shows the current price and the next price before anyone buys. All of these prices are before shipping and tax.
How much does an artist earn per t-shirt on HollaJack?
On every tee sold, HollaJack keeps a flat $18.00. Everything above $18 is split 50/50 between you and HollaJack. Written as a formula, your share of any tee is the tee price minus $18, divided by 2.
Take the first default Unisex tee in a run. It sells for $23.00. That is $5.00 above $18, and half of $5.00 is $2.50. So you earn $2.50 on N° 001. It is a split, not a markup you keep in full. The table below runs the same formula further into a default run.
| Edition | Tee price | Amount above $18 | Artist earns on that tee | Artist total so far |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| N° 001 | $23.00 | $5.00 | $2.50 | $2.50 |
| N° 010 | $23.90 | $5.90 | $2.95 | $27.25 |
| N° 050 | $27.90 | $9.90 | $4.95 | $186.25 |
| N° 100 | $32.90 | $14.90 | $7.45 | $497.50 |
| N° 250 | $47.90 | $29.90 | $14.95 | $2,181.25 |
The table uses the default Unisex tee: a $2.00 starting art price and a $0.10 step. These figures are arithmetic from the defaults, not predictions. Nothing here suggests a run will reach N° 050, N° 100 or N° 250. The table only shows what the formula pays at each point if it does.
Two things follow from the arithmetic. First, each $0.10 step in price adds $0.05 to your share, because the step is split like every other dollar above $18. Second, the same formula applies to every tee in the run. N° 001 and N° 250 are worked out exactly the same way.
You set the price of your art. Above a flat $18 per tee, every dollar is split evenly.
Where do you see what you earned?
Earnings show on every order in your artist dashboard. Each order also carries the edition number it took, so you can see what you earned on each piece in each run.
Because the formula is fixed, you can work out any order yourself. Take the tee price, subtract $18 and halve the rest. The same arithmetic applies on every tee, so there is nothing to reconcile later between what you expected and what you see. The full earnings formula page has a calculator if you would rather not do it by hand.
The starting price is the lever you control. Each extra dollar you add to the starting art price adds $1.00 to the buyer’s price and $0.50 to your share of every tee. That trade-off deserves its own decision, and how to set a price you won’t regret in six months walks through it.
You keep the rights to your work
You keep the rights to your artwork throughout. HollaJack is licensed to produce and sell the piece. You can stop a run at any time.
Buyers own the physical numbered piece, not the rights to the image, and making and selling copies is not allowed. Each piece is made to order after purchase by a print-on-demand production partner and shipped direct. Nothing is warehoused, so there is no inventory to fund and no upfront cost. Your name goes on every piece, and you get a storefront page of your own.
If you are weighing whether to apply, start with becoming a HollaJack artist. Once you are in, the steps are short: upload your artwork, place it on the garment, check the quality warning, set your starting art price and publish.
Frequently asked questions
How much does HollaJack keep on each t-shirt?
HollaJack keeps a flat $18.00 on every tee sold, plus half of everything above $18. The other half of everything above $18 goes to the artist.
