In short: A numbered edition t-shirt is a printed garment that carries a permanent position in a run of the same design: N° 001, N° 002, and so on. On HollaJack the number is assigned when your order completes, written to your order, never reissued, and backed by a certificate of ownership. Runs stay open, so the number records your place in the run rather than a fixed total.
What is a numbered edition t-shirt?
Printmakers have numbered their work for well over a century. A run of prints is pulled from the same plate or screen, and each sheet is marked in pencil with its position, so that 12/50 means the twelfth of fifty. The number turns a reproducible image into a set of distinct objects, each with its own place in the history of that image.
A numbered edition t-shirt applies the same idea to a garment. The design is reproducible, but each piece is assigned a position in the run that nobody else can hold. On HollaJack every design is a run, and every purchase takes the next number in it.
How does the number get assigned?
- An independent artist publishes a design and sets the starting price of the art.
- You claim a piece. The product page shows the number you would hold and the current price before you buy.
- When your order completes, the next number in the run is written to your order. The counter only moves forward, so that number is never given to anyone else, even if an order is later refunded.
- Your piece is made to order and shipped to you. A certificate of ownership is issued for it when your order is paid, and shows your number once the order completes.
Is a numbered edition the same as a limited edition?
No, and the difference is worth being precise about. A limited edition stops at a fixed count announced in advance: 1 of 100, and then never again. A HollaJack run is an open numbered run. There is no cap, but every number in it can only ever be held once, and each sale steps the price up by a set amount.
So the scarcity is real, but it is scarcity of position rather than of total supply. N° 007 of a run exists exactly once. If the run becomes popular, the low numbers are the ones that were claimed before anyone knew, at the lowest prices the run will ever have. Timed, limited and open editions are compared side by side here.
| Compared on | Unnumbered print-on-demand tee | Capped limited edition | HollaJack numbered edition |

| Is each piece distinguishable? | No | Yes, by number | Yes, by number |
| Total pieces | Unlimited | Fixed in advance | Open; each number held once |
| What sets the price | The seller, usually flat | The seller, usually flat | Starts at the artist’s price and steps up with every sale |
| Record of ownership | A receipt | Sometimes a paper certificate | An order record plus a transferable certificate with a public page |
| Made to order | Usually | Often pre-produced | Always |
What does the number give the person who holds it?
- A fixed position. Your number is yours permanently. It is written to your order, shown on the piece’s certificate, and never reissued.
- A price you can see coming. Every piece shows the current price and the next price. Early numbers cost less than later ones, which is the honest reward for being early.
- Provenance you can show. Each piece has a certificate of ownership with a public page and a QR code. It names the artist, shows the current owner as a first name and last initial, and records every change of hands. How certificates work.
- A way to pass it on. If you sell or gift the piece, you transfer the certificate. It moves only when the new owner accepts, and the record keeps the change of hands.
How is the price of a numbered tee set?
The price is the garment plus the artist’s art. A Unisex tee at the default art price starts at $23.00 for N° 001, and every edition after that adds $0.10 by default. The artist chooses the starting price of their art, so runs from different artists start at different places. You always see the number and the price before you claim.
For artists, the split behind that price is published in full: how much artists earn on HollaJack.
Where can I see numbered edition t-shirts?
Every piece in the shop is a numbered edition by an independent artist, and the numbered art tees page explains what to look for when you are choosing one.
Frequently asked questions
Is the edition number printed on the shirt?
The number is recorded to your order and shown on the piece’s certificate of ownership, which has its own public page and QR code. Those records are what make your piece verifiable, rather than a mark that could be copied onto another garment.
Can two people ever hold the same number?
No. The run’s counter only moves forward. Each number is assigned once, when an order completes, and is never reissued, including after a refund.
Why would I want a low number?
Because it can only be held once and it was the cheapest point in the run. Whether that matters to you is personal, but it is a fact about your piece that cannot change later.
Does a numbered edition ever end?
An artist can stop a run at any time. Until then it stays open, and every new piece takes the next number at the next price.
