How the Artist Split Actually Works

Close-up of hands using a calculator next to a company invoice, depicting a financial calculation concept.

Independent artists are, understandably, wary of “we handle the business side” platforms — that phrase has historically meant unclear cuts and opaque accounting more often than it’s meant an actual fair deal. Plenty of artists have been burned by a platform that promised simplicity and delivered a payout they couldn’t fully account for. It’s worth stating plainly how this actually works here, rather than assuming the mechanic speaks for itself or asking artists to just trust it.

You set your own margin

You set your own margin above the production cost. Production cost — the material and printing cost of actually making the piece — is a fixed number you don’t control, since it’s set by what production genuinely costs, not by any platform’s discretion. But everything you charge above that floor is entirely yours to set, and you see it broken out on every single order, not folded into an opaque total you have to take on faith.

There’s no negotiation involved, no tiered take-rate that quietly changes based on your sales volume, and no additional fee that shows up after the fact that wasn’t visible at the moment you originally set the price. What you see when you set a price is what actually happens when that price is paid.

The price-breakdown shown to buyers is the same math you’re seeing on your own end — there’s nothing to reconcile.

Why the price breakdown exists

This is also why the price breakdown shown to buyers — artwork cost, printing cost, total — exists in the first place, visible on every product page. It’s not just transparency offered for the buyer’s benefit, though it is that too. It’s the same math you’re seeing on your own end as the artist, stated the same way, so there’s nothing to reconcile later between what you expect to be paid and what actually shows up in your account.

  • Production cost is fixed and disclosed — not a number you have to guess at.
  • Your margin is entirely yours to set, with no hidden tiers based on volume.
  • The breakdown buyers see matches the breakdown you see, line for line.

You keep the rights to your work

You keep the rights to your work throughout the entire relationship. HollaJack produces the piece under license to sell it — the design itself stays yours, to use elsewhere, print through a different shop, or retire entirely, on your own terms and your own timeline, regardless of how it performs here.
